  He founded the Redemptorists to preach in mountain villages nobody else reached, gathered the poorest of Naples into evening prayer groups, and wrote the moral theology that told confessors to be gentle.

  He was one of the seven deacons of the Roman Church. When Valerian's edict ordered every bishop, priest and deacon killed at once, he was the last of the seven to die, four days after the pope, on 10 August 258. What he is famous for saying is in no early account.
