St. Luke the Evangelist
He stayed. Writing for the last time from prison, Paul lists the man who had left him for the world and then says: only Luke is with me. He had already given years to walking beside him, and the account we have of those journeys is his because he was there.

St. Simon the Zealot
He was called the Zealot for the fierceness of his attachment to the Law, and he spent his life alongside Matthew, who had collected taxes for the occupying power. Whatever he had been before, he stayed in a group that contained the man he had every reason to despise.

Sick most of her life and with no schooling, she founded seventeen convents against furious opposition, started the Discalced friars with John of the Cross, and wrote the books that taught the Church to pray.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux
She taught the novices in her care the little way she had found, carried two missionary priests in prayer as her assigned brothers, and left the manuscripts the Church later declared doctrine.
