St. Peter Damian
He left a teaching career to live as a hermit, then wrote a treatise naming the vices of the clergy of his day and made enemies with it. Sent to Milan as the pope’s legate, he faced down a rioting crowd in the cathedral and got both sides to accept his ruling.

Asked to save his life by cursing Christ, he answered that he had served him eighty-six years and been done no harm, and asked how he could curse the King who saved him. He said it out loud, in a stadium, to a proconsul offering him a way out.
