The duke of Bohemia raised Christian by his grandmother Ludmila, murdered by his brother Boleslav outside Prague, and venerated ever since as the Czech nation's patron.

- DEATH YEAR DELIBERATELY OMITTED FROM THE ONE_LINE. New Advent contradicts itself: the article body gives 28 September 935, while the encyclopedia's own W index describes him as 'murdered by his brother c. 929'. Contemporary Czech scholarship leans to 935 and older sources to 929, but a source that disagrees with itself cannot settle the year, so the sentence is written without it. The 28 September feast is not in question.
- HISTORICITY: 'traditional'. Veneration was early, continuous and unbroken, but the earliest narratives — the Old Church Slavonic legend, Crescente fide, Gumpold's Passio — postdate him by decades rather than being contemporary. That his death year is disputed by six years is itself the argument for this rating, and it says nothing against the cult.
- STATUS: pre_congregation with status_year null. He died in the tenth century, before formal canonization existed.
